The other day I posted that Facebook changed the layout for business pages. Most people don’t have much comment on this so far… however, I suspect that they will soon. Now though, Facebook users have something else to complain about
. The look of their own home page.
Yep, Facebook changed the layout of the user home page again. This time in a bit more of a dramatic fashion. There’s basically a three column layout with navigation on the left, your news feed in the middle, and “highlights” on the right.
I’ve already begun to see negative comments about Facebook’s new layout. Similar to the last time Facebook changed users’ home pages. Mostly in my day-to-day travels. So back to the Twitter search I went to see the buzz. Not too much negative on the search “new Facebook” this time around so I decided to dig a bit deeper. A search on “hate Facebook” turned up a lot of chatter about the new look, all negative of course since I had the word “hate” in the search. To be fair, I also searched for “Facebook like OR love” to see if anyone had any positive thoughts about the new layout. That search turned up no comments about the new look at all. So it seems that the only people talking about it are the ones who hate the new look. That’s not uncommon actually… people tend to bitch only when they’re upset, but I thought since it was fresh and new I might find some good feedback… I’m still looking.
I’ve going to reserve my comments for when I’ve had enough time to actually use the interface. It’s challenging using a new UI, but that doesn’t make it bad. I already like some of the new features. Specifically, the link in the nav section on the left that lets me see just my San Diego network. That is going to come in handy. Design wise I like the rounded corners on the photos and other borders… that’s just a personal preference though.
Still… knowing that most people don’t like change, and for a ever growing computer community that uses Facebook for very specific tasks, I think there’s going to be a bit of an uproar again.
Let me know what you think of the new Facebook. Like it? Hate it? DO you even care? I’d think with 175 Million users (and growing), there would be quite a bit of research that goes into changing the one page that EVERYONE sees when they log in. I’ve been a part of some extensive research for far less users than that. Of course, no amount of research can prepare you for what happens when you flip that switch, and the wrath that comes after
.
