Still confused on how to retweet something to a *particular follower*, rather than all my followers, but perhaps that’s a blind spot I’ve got and I’m missing the obvious! Cheers.

Glad you liked the post. The information holds true still even though I wrote it quite a long time ago.

The . before a tweet is used because people are starting their tweet with an @{username} and they want all their followers to see it. For example, if you start a tweet with @CantonDog only you, me and anyone following *both* of us would see it because Twitter treats that as a “reply”. If you add a . before the @ (or any character) then Twitter treats that as a “mention” and will show it to all your followers.

As far as direct messages (DM), you can only DM a person who is following you. That’s a Twitter rule.

Your help notes are really useful. I still have a Q. Recently I notice some tweets commence with a . before the @name and sometimes a ” What do each of these mean? AND is there a ways I can direct message someones’ tweet. i.e. retweet just to one person. Thanks

If you don't want to follow someone, it's as easy as visiting their profile (or clicking their username in you timeline) and clicking “unfollow”. If there is someone who you think is posting spam, you can report them for spam (which will also block that user from your timeline).
