I've been notified via email that I have follwers, but when I check out their profile, Twitter has a message stating something like that account has been suspended due to suspicious activity.
And now Twitter has added TwitSexy. It's like TwitPic, only porn pix. There's plenty of porn sites on the internet, WHY does Twitter have to add to it?? I'm deeply offended and wish I could find a Twitter-like site to use that's clean. To my knowledge, Facebook and MySpace doesn't have that crap!
(Hey, not all people are into porn! I am clearly not one of them.)

You made it simple: Twitter (and other web-based tools), if NOT USED for self-prorotion purposes, is a very cool way to communicate with interesting people.
Mainly if they share some common interests.
But it´s very useless to know that "Clara has lost her math class" or "It´s raining here".
The concept of "here" is local, not even syncronous with another tweeters...
BTW, as programmer and teacher, I MUST promote every tool as a way to keep my students online (even limited to 140 chars).
On the other hand, I adviced that Orkut has been "destroyed" by brazilians (yes, I´m from Brazil), with lotz of links/virus/porno pix and the Twitter has the same fate...
What abt a "Let keep the Twitter clean" mob?

You are right in a sense. But, you have to understand that not everyone uses Twitter the same way, and that there is no standard way of teaching the twitter users how to use it. Understanding the 80/20 principle, I follow as many that follow me to find that 20% of content that I can learn from and grow from. I also share lots of links in my updates, but it is not self promotion. I promote other relevant content connected to what I like. I promote my stuff less than 10% of the time. The majority are doing what you said above. There are a few peeps that were taught the right way and use Twitter sensibly.

Twitter is a good tool as is.
But some ppl are creating fake profiles to make theirselves "known" or even to figure in ranks as "top 10" (in matter of # of followers).
Is the number of followers a rule or a hint?
Maybe.
As Todd mentioned, large numbers sounds strange in terms of "what my followers - or the ppl I´m following - are doing?".
So, keep ur eyes opened with those profiles.
And, obviously, with those that promises "hundreds of followers" in-a-click.
I prefer to follow ( and to be followed by) 20 REAL users than 45,000 fake ones.

This is my (humble) opinion.
